How to start a workplace step challenge

Set up a private workplace walking challenge with a clear goal and simple invitations.

Start with a small group and a goal people understand. A workplace challenge should be easy to join and easy to leave.

Choose the target together

Steps.Team offers 300,000 steps per person over 28 days as a starting point. That is about 10,714 steps a day. Change the target to suit your group; it is a challenge setting, not a health recommendation.

Compare a few starting targets

Multiply the daily target by the number of days. These examples are challenge settings; choose a comfortable target with your participants.

Per-person targets over 28 days
Daily average 28-day total
5,000 steps 140,000 steps
7,500 steps 210,000 steps
10,000 steps 280,000 steps
About 10,714 steps 300,000 steps

A shared group target is different: if five people each aim for 280,000 steps, the equivalent combined target is 1,400,000. Make clear which kind of target you are setting.

Create a private group

Sign in with your workplace email, create a group and share its invitation link or code with the people you want to invite. Group names are not listed in a public workplace directory. Someone with a valid invitation and a matching workplace email can join without waiting for approval.

Can one workplace have several groups?

Yes. A workplace can have separate private groups for different teams, sites or challenge rounds. A verified workplace email does not reveal every group at that organisation. Each person sees only the groups they have joined through an invitation.

Who can manage a group?

The person who creates a group becomes its owner. The owner can make another member an admin or transfer ownership. Owners can remove members or admins; admins can remove ordinary members. If the owner leaves, they must first choose another owner unless they are the group’s only member.

Make participation comfortable

Explain the goal and what appears in the rankings before inviting colleagues. Keep participation voluntary. Members can leave a challenge or group themselves.

Start with a clear invitation

Download a team invitation template. Add your group name, dates, goal and private link before sharing it with your colleagues.

Keep the next round simple

Choose a one-off challenge or enable repeating rounds. A repeating 28-day challenge follows 28-day periods, not calendar months. Review the goal with your group before repeating it.

Before sending your invitation

Download the organiser checklist to record the goal, dates and sharing rules. If you are choosing between apps, use our seven-question selection guide.
